The Structure and Growth of Wise Use In Minnesota

About These Briefing Papers

The following wise use information arises from briefing papers created by the late Dr. Alden Lind who, beginning in 1994, researched and tracked the growth of the wise use movement in Minnesota. Although several years old now, these papers provide much insight, and are particularly useful in outlining the structure of the movement here, especially the county supremacy angle.

Dr. Lind was born in Duluth and raised on the North Shore some 16 miles past Two Harbors at Twin Points Resort. He received a BA from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, a Ph. D. from University of Oregon at Eugene, and Post-doc fellowships at University of North Carolina in Information Science and at Yale University in Psychology.

He taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Minnesota - Duluth, St. Scholastica (Duluth), and University of Wisconsin - Superior. He also operated the family resort from 1975 to its closure and sale in 1995.

Dr. Lind began his adult political involvement in 1956 as Lake County (MN) DFL chair and continued at very active levels in Oregon, North Carolina and MN at various times. He was active in Civil Rights activities in Oregon and North Carolina and in assisting union organizing activities in North Carolina.

The recipient of awards from both the National Wildlife Federation and Izaak Walton League of America, Dr. Lind has been active in environmental activities in Minnesota since 1975. He passed away in December of 2001, and is greatly missed by the League.
