Membership Survey Results 2013

2013 McCabe Chapter Member Survey Results

(22 respondents)

1)      Why did you join the Izaak Walton League, McCabe Chapter?

·         My husband was already an active member, when I retired I had the time to join him

·         Increase involvement in regional environmental issues.

·         To work on environmental concerns with people I admire.

·         It's a good, moderate, thoughtful environmental conservation group.

·         I'm involved in a number of similar member organizations.

·         To help protect and restore the air, water, soil, woods, and wildlife.

·         Dave Zentner was the real reason. His record for true achievements in protecting and restoring the environment is an inspiration. The Ike's get things done!

·         Good common sense organization that is not too far left or right on issues.

·         Recently moved; am a life-long Ike and now McCabe is closer.

·         An active group promoting a wide range of conservation issues.

·         Hunter and fishermen that understood how important it was to protect the environment.

·         Invited by a member - Opportunity to support those working to protect our environment and perhaps contribute in some small way - to be informed

·         The Ikes have a great connection with the hook and bullet crowd and the tree huggers. That is rare and valuable

·         It gives me a chance to interact with like minded people who share my interest in preserving and protecting the environment. It also gives me an opportunity to be kept informed on environmental issues including legislation and proposed inappropriate as well as positive appropriate uses of our public lands.

·         Concern for the environment, fishing habitat

·         Because it was very involved in conservation policies

·         So I can stay well informed about conservation/natural resource issues locally and around the state and country. I also want to participate as an informed voice for needed policy changes

·         I was invited to an Ike dinner by an Ike

·         Their level of eco-activism. I see my membership as an opportunity to environmental service

·         We have a strong belief in the need for the ethics of sustainability – IWLA has always fought for basic conservation, science based, and good people are members

2)      How often do you attend the general membership meetings (held the first Wednesday of each month at Hartley Nature Center)?

·         Usually - 14

·         Occasionally - 7

·         Never – 1

3)      If you answered “never” to question 2, why haven’t you attended?

·         Too busy, even though topics are interesting.

·         FYI, I used to have the feeling that the membership meetings were more or less for active and involved members and board members. Since getting involved a little more I now understand that membership meetings are more or less open to everyone.

4)      Is the time and place of the general membership meetings  (7 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month, September through May, at Hartley Nature Center) convenient for you and/or your family?

·         Yes – 21

·         No – 2

·         The time is convenient but the place is not

If you answered no, no, what time/place would be more convenient?

Note: a number of people gave answers  to this question, even if they thought the current time/location worked for them

·         Somewhere nearer the center of Duluth. When it was at Canal Park it was much more convenient.

·         Move around town to rotate convenience factor.

·         Perhaps move the time to one hour earlier in winter?

·         Cloquet Forestry Center would also work

·         We live on the west side of town, but we do enjoy Hartley

·         Wednesday can conflict with church functions (2)

5)      How would you generally rate the topics and speakers presented at the general membership meetings?

Excellent – 8                                       Poor – 0

Good – 10                                           I don’t attend - 1

Fair – 2

6)      Do you have suggestions for topics you would like to see covered at membership meetings?

·         Sustainable energy practices that can be applied to individual homes

·         Regional air quality

·         Environmental justice

·         Select topics relevant to helping protect air, water. soil, woods, and wildlife. Not just pretty pictures, but action oriented subjects where members can see what is needed and how they can lend a hand.

·         Superior National Forest management

·         On-going moose mortality studies;

·         How the 2012 flood changed the North Shore streams

·         How climate change affects wildlife, fish, & forests

·         Wildlife corridors

·         Even though global warming and issues like sulfide mining have been well discussed I think there is still a need to create more and better understanding. Perhaps sponsoring more meetings for the general public would be good to get more understanding of the Izaak Walton League and the issues that are before us.

·         More presentations about national environmental policies

·         More activist thrust would be good. Also topics on sustainable living

·         An update on moose population collapse and associated research

·         The need to abandon the legal ditching system in NE Minnesota and restoration of impacted wetlands

·         A look at recent and ongoing changes to the state trust lands program

·         The impacts of climate change over the next century

8) Do you have suggestions for programs or activities you would like to see the Chapter offer?

·         Speakers from state and national environmental protection departments and agencies scheduled on a rotating and regular basis, adjacent states of WI, MI, IA, SD, ND, and Canada.

·         I would like to see a presentation on any studies that have been conducted on the decline of the moose population and I would hope the IKES would take a strong stand on what effect sulfide mining could have on northern Minnesota. Wetlands and water quality of the St. Louis River and other tributaries of Lake Superior.

·         Perhaps partner with North House Folk School on topics such as sustainable living, outdoor schools, and making outdoor equipment and accessories

9)  We use a variety of media resources to keep members informed. Please tell us which you use and how useful you find them

10)  How well does the McCabe Chapter keep you informed about relevant issues via general membership meetings, the Chapter newsletter, Chapter website and informational e-mails?

  • Very well – 14
  • Fairly well – 7
  • Not well – 1

11) Do you have suggestions for how we can improve the way we share information with members?

·         Keep up the direct e-mails

·         Sponsor joint meetings with other groups.

·         You should get a Facebook page.

·         Has improved this past year

·         Even though I said, above, that I did not get much of my information from Facebook and the chapter web site etc, that does not mean that this could not be a better information source for people. This applies especially to people like me who are slowly moving to using these sources to get information. I think you need to do more to bring members along to use electronic information

·         I’ll have to try the electronic services provided to see if I like them. I know hard copies are more expensive

·         I love the e-mails on what is happening around the area that we might want to attend

12)  How important are the following to achieving our mission of protecting the environment, educating the public about conservation issues and involving people in the outdoors?

13)  Is there anything you would like to see the McCabe Chapter do that we aren’t currently doing?

·         Organizing some meetings with like-minded groups (e.g., eco-rotary) in the region.

·         Pay more attention to local issues within the city and surrounding communities.

·         All IKES chapters need to work harder on recruiting and retaining younger members.

·         Anything that would encourage families with kids to get outside.

·         I’m too new to know. From what I’ve seen its an excellent organization

·         Local hands-on projects

·         Clarify the interconnection between modern lifestyles and their impact on the environment and what to do about it.

·         Involve youth in other areas besides hunting/fishing

14) Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

·         Tap into high level managers of USEPA, NOAA, USCG, USFS, USFWS, etc, and ask them for updates to keep us current with what's going on.

·         We are pleased to be a part of this organization. It is well-run, and the goals match our own.

·         The Ikes have a great reputation for getting on the right side of issues and staying for the long haul. Science based positions are usually right in the long run.

·         Izaak Walton League, McCabe Chapter, is a wonderful organization and has great community wide respect. Much of this is due to the dedicated involvement of many well known and respected community leaders. I think you can take advantage of this even more to influence political forces.

·         We need to alert young people on how they can live a better life for themselves and their families through sustainable practices

·         Keep up the great work (2)
